From lowly beginnings as a private airfield owned by Home Counties Aviation Services more than 70 years ago, Gatwick has now become Britain's second largest airport and is the and busiest single runway airport in the world. The airport is a major employer in the area generating some 23,000 people on-airport jobs and a further 13,000 jobs through related activities.
